Do you want to help children learn how to process their emotions in a healthy way? 😊

I’m experimenting with using a simple, kid-friendly version of the RAIN method to guide children through their emotions.

RAIN stands for Recognize, Allow, Investigate, and Nurture. It’s a gentle way to help children understand and manage what they’re feeling.

Here’s a simplified way to explain RAIN to children, using language that’s easy for them to understand:

Recognize:

“Let’s think about what we’re feeling right now. Are you feeling happy, sad, excited, or something else?”

Allow:

“It’s okay to feel this way. All feelings are okay. Let’s just let the feeling be here, even if it’s not comfortable.”

Investigate:

Can we think about where in our body we feel this? Is it in your tummy, your chest, or somewhere else? It’s okay if you’re not sure.”

Nurture:

What’s something kind we can say to ourselves or do for ourselves when we feel this way? Maybe a hug, some deep breaths, or thinking of something happy.”

Remember, the goal is to make the steps relatable and understandable for their age.

You might use examples or metaphors that are familiar to them. For instance, you could compare feelings to weather patterns, explaining how just like weather, feelings come and go.

It’s important to give children space and time to process their feelings.

This approach encourages self-awareness and emotional intelligence from a young age.

Let’s review what we learned.

Recognize:

We start by identifying our feelings. ‘Are you feeling happy, sad, or something else?’

Allow:

We accept the feeling without judgment. ‘It’s okay to feel this way. Let’s let the feeling be here.’

Investigate:

We explore the feeling a bit more. ‘Where do you feel it in your body? Your tummy, chest, or somewhere else?’

Nurture:

We think of ways to be kind to ourselves. ‘What’s something nice we can do for ourselves right now?’

It’s all about giving children the tools they need to understand and navigate their emotional world.

Do you use similar methods with your kids or students? Let’s share ideas and experiences!
