The difference between achieving big goals and achieving small ones is not just a matter of setting bigger goals, but also breaking them down into manageable steps that lead to progress and momentum.

The difference between someone who accomplishes big goals and someone who accomplished smaller goals is that one of them sets big goals. The difference between someone that accomplishes big goals and someone who doesn’t accomplish any goals is that one of them sets small goals.

Success is often a result of setting and pursuing goals that challenge and motivate us. Understanding the importance of setting both big and small goals can be the key to unlocking personal and professional growth. This guide will explore how to find the perfect balance between these two types of goals to maximize your chances of success.

Set Big Goals: Dream and Define Your Vision

Big goals serve as your guiding star, providing a sense of direction and purpose.

  1. Consider your ultimate aspirations in life and define clear, long-term objectives.
  2. Dream big, but ensure your goals are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound).

For example, in 2019, I set the following 5 year goal — teach 1 billion people how to freestyle rap by June 2024.

Break Big Goals Into Small Goals: Create an Actionable Plan

Divide your big goals into smaller, more manageable tasks.

  1. Smaller goals serve as stepping stones, helping you stay focused and motivated.
  2. Establish deadlines for each task, and make sure they are realistic and attainable.

For example, in 2019, I set the 1 year goal — Develop a proven tool and framework that can turn a group of hobbyists into a performing rap crew by the end of 2020.

Track Your Progress: Monitor and Adapt

Regularly evaluate your progress toward both your big and small goals.

  1. Celebrate your accomplishments, and learn from setbacks.
  2. Be prepared to adapt your plan as needed, refining your goals and milestones to stay on track.

I set smaller 1 month goals, for example: teaching myself how to freestyle rap. I tracked how many minutes I could rap without messing up and celebrated when I reached 30 minutes.

Other ways to track progress was the number of people in the Famous Rapper Cyphers Discord channel, the number of people showing up to the weekly cypher, and the total number of people who have learned how to freestyle rap.

Stay Motivated: Maintain Momentum and Persevere

Acknowledge the importance of both big and small goals in keeping you motivated.

  1. Surround yourself with supportive individuals who share your ambitions and can offer guidance.
  2. Remember that setbacks are a natural part of the process; learn from them and keep moving forward.

For example, I created a group chat with 7 other rappers who were also determined to record and release an album. One of my goals was to release an album, and running this group helped me write and record the album. I ran a 7 week program where each person in the group was encouraged to create 1 new song a week. We rotated each week to provide personal, detailed feedback on the songs we were creating.

Achieve Success: Reap the Rewards of Balanced Goal-Setting

By striking the right balance between big and small goals, you increase your chances of success.

  1. Enjoy the satisfaction of achieving your smaller milestones while staying focused on your larger objectives.
  2. Use the lessons learned and confidence gained from accomplishing your goals to continue growing and setting new challenges for yourself.

Sometimes, it can seem like you are moving away from your big goals. But do not worry. For example, I focused on projects unrelated to teaching 1 billion people how to freestyle rap, and had many failed direct attempts at building a scalable system to achieve the goal.

It is natural to experience setbacks and obstacles along the way when pursuing big goals. These challenges can sometimes make it feel like you are moving away from your ultimate aspirations, but it is important to remember that setbacks are a natural part of the journey. Instead of becoming discouraged, use setbacks as an opportunity to learn and grow, and refine your approach. By breaking your big goals into smaller, more manageable tasks and tracking your progress, you can stay focused and motivated on achieving your long-term objectives. You can experiment with different strategies and incorporate the learnings into your long term vision. Remember to stay persistent, surround yourself with supportive individuals, and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem.

Conclusion:

Achieving success is a journey that requires a combination of ambitious, long-term goals and a series of smaller, achievable milestones. By finding the right balance between these two types of goals, you can create a clear and actionable plan that keeps you motivated, focused, and on the path to realizing your dreams. Remember to celebrate your accomplishments, learn from your setbacks, and continue to challenge yourself as you pursue exponential growth and enlightenment.
