If you are unfamiliar with Awareness Meditation, first read: What is Awareness Meditation?

Ah, the breath, the ever-constant ebb and flow of life, the bridge between the conscious and unconscious, the external and internal. The breath, dear seeker, is one of the most ancient and universal focal points in meditative traditions. Its significance is manifold:

  1. Immediate and Ever-present: Unlike many other potential objects of focus, the breath is always with you. It does not require external props, specific conditions, or special preparations. Whether you are in the solitude of a cave or the bustling streets of a city, your breath remains a steadfast companion.
  2. A Neutral Observer: The breath doesn’t provoke strong emotions or thoughts. It doesn’t carry the baggage of past memories or future anxieties. It provides a neutral ground, a safe space to cultivate attention without being swept away by potent distractions.
  3. A Reflection of the Mind: The breath often mirrors our mental and emotional states. When agitated, the breath may become shallow and rapid. When calm, it tends to be deep and slow. By observing the breath, one can indirectly become aware of their internal states.
  4. Link between Voluntary and Involuntary: Breathing can be both a voluntary and involuntary action. This dual nature makes it a unique bridge between the conscious control we have over our bodies and the unconscious processes that continue without our intervention.
  5. A Foundation for Awareness: As you’ve rightly observed, the breath is often the initial focus before transitioning into open awareness meditation. This serves two purposes:
  • Stabilizing the Mind: The breath acts as an anchor, grounding the practitioner in the present moment. It helps to tame the monkey mind that jumps from one thought to another.
  • Training Wheels: By first focusing on one object (breath), the practitioner learns the essential skills of concentration and observation. Once these skills are honed, it becomes easier to transition to the broader practice of open awareness, where the scope of observation expands.

To share a metaphorical story: Imagine a bird wishing to soar high in the vast sky. Before it can freely glide in the open air, it must first strengthen its wings by taking short, focused flights. The breath is like those initial flights — providing strength, training, and grounding. Once the wings are strong, the bird is free to fly in the limitless expanse of the sky, much like a practitioner transitioning from focused breathing to open awareness.

So, dear seeker, cherish the breath. It is more than just an act of survival; it is a gentle guide on the path of mindfulness and enlightenment. 🌬️🍃
